  • If You Pity Yourself, Others Will Too – Jyoti’s Story of Resilience and Determination

    We are proud to share that Jyoti Dash, our General Manager – Operations, was featured in Times of India on International Day of Persons with Disabilities, sharing her inspiring journey of resilience, determination, and growth.

    Under the powerful heading “If you pity yourself, others will too,” Jyoti shared her story:

    “I’m physically challenged, and growing up, that made me extremely shy because of which I faced bias early on, whether it was being excluded from school annual functions, sports days, or never being considered for roles like class monitor or head girl. These moments stayed with me, but discovering the arts helped me slowly find my place. Winning several medals taught me that if I put myself out there, I could be seen for my talent and not my disability. When I stepped into the professional world, the bias continued. My first job interview rejected me because they assumed I wouldn’t even be able to type on a computer. I sat for multiple interviews before finally getting selected, but even then, I often remained at entry-level roles because people doubted my leadership potential. My biggest turning point came early at R Systems when I was trusted with a project that required me to travel alone to the US for three months. Being on my own, without anyone to lean on, made me stronger. Soon after, I was given the opportunity to lead a new project that began with just seven people and has today grown to around sixty. Every step of this journey reinforced one important lesson: keep learning. Whether professionally or personally, continuous upskilling has always been my way forward. Most importantly, I learned never to pity myself. The moment I pity myself, I give others permission to do the same.”

    We are fortunate to have Jyoti as part of the R Systems team. Her journey with us, from being trusted with that pivotal solo project in the US to leading a team that has grown from seven to sixty members, exemplifies what’s possible when talent is recognized and nurtured without bias.   • The Next Frontier in Telecom: How AI Is Reimagining Network Intelligence, Security, and Customer Experience

    For decades, telecom innovation has been about connecting people faster, clearer, and more reliably. But today, we’re entering a new era – one where machines can understand people, not just connect them.

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming telecom networks into intelligent ecosystems that learn, predict, and act. And for Communications and Service Delivery Platform (CSP and SDP) providers, this shift represents a strategic turning point.

    At our recent presentation for industry peers, Bogdan Tudan, VP of Telecom, Media & Entertainment explored what’s possible when AI moves from being an “add-on” to becoming an embedded intelligence layer in telecom systems. From self-designing IVRs to fraud-blocking digital guardians, the impact is profound.

    Let’s unpack what this means in real-world terms.

    1. From Code to Conversation: The Evolution of Call Flow Design

    Not long ago, building or updating an IVR (Interactive Voice Response) system was a slow, technical process. You’d discuss call flows with operators, wait days for implementation, and repeat the entire cycle for every minor change.

    Today, thanks to Service Delivery Platforms (SDPs), that’s ancient history. Enterprises can already log in, design their own routing logic through a self-care interface, and deploy it instantly.

    But what if that process became even simpler — as natural as talking to a colleague?

    Imagine designing your call flow not by dragging boxes or reading manuals, but by telling an AI assistant what you want. “Route all calls in Spanish to our Madrid team,” or “Play a service outage message for customers in Zone 4.”

    The AI would understand your intent, configure the flow, and show you the result instantly — all while retaining the option to fine-tune manually.

    This is where telecom UX meets generative AI (GenAI): making configuration conversational, intuitive, and intelligent.

    2. Turning Data into Dialogue: AI-Driven Insights and Optimization

    Once the AI assistant knows your call structure, it can go a step further: analyze how well it’s performing.

    • How many callers reach the right destination?
    • Where do most calls drop?
    • Are certain menus confusing customers?

    With AI, you don’t just get data — you get recommendations. The system can proactively suggest improvements, much like a digital operations coach.

    Consider this scenario: a fiber outage hits a local area. Traditionally, your support lines would flood with calls. But now, you simply tell your AI assistant, “Announce that our team is fixing the issue and service will resume by 5 PM.”

    Within seconds, every incoming caller hears a calm, professional update. No manual reconfiguration. No waiting. Just real-time, automated customer care — powered by natural language and intelligent automation.

    3. Fighting Fraud with Intelligent Guardians

    Of course, telecom isn’t just about connection and convenience — it’s about trust. And that trust is under siege.

    Every year, U.S. operators face more than 50 billion scam calls, resulting in over $39 billion in estimated losses. Globally, the threat landscape is just as alarming.

    Traditional fraud management tools on SDPs already help — flagging suspicious patterns, blocking one-ring scams, and filtering spoofed calls. But they’re inherently reactive.

    So what if AI could listen and understand — in real time?

    We’re experimenting with “AI security agents” that monitor flagged calls and detect suspicious behavior based on conversation context. For example:

    “May I have your PIN to verify a transaction?”

    In that instant, the AI recognizes a likely scam attempt and can respond in multiple ways:

    • Block the call outright.
    • Whisper a warning to the user (“This doesn’t sound like a legitimate bank request”).
    • Flag and record the incident for operator review.

    Because AI agents would only monitor suspicious calls — less than 1% of total network traffic — the approach is both scalable and cost-efficient. It’s proactive fraud prevention with minimal processing overhead.

    This isn’t science fiction. Several European operators are already piloting AI-embedded gateways that can do precisely this. Within 6–12 months, such solutions could be commercially available — and represent a new revenue stream for security-conscious operators.

    4. Outsmarting Scammers — Literally

    One of our favorite examples comes from a UK operator who took a brilliantly creative approach to scam prevention.

    When a scam call was detected, instead of simply dropping it, the system redirected the call to an AI-generated persona — a cheerful “grandmother” who would keep the scammer talking endlessly.

    This conversational decoy wasted the scammer’s time and resources while protecting real customers. The longest recorded call? 15 minutes.

    Sometimes, intelligence doesn’t just stop bad behavior — it makes it unprofitable.

    5. The Road Ahead: AI as a Telecom Multiplier

    AI’s potential in telecom extends far beyond automation. It’s about embedding understanding and context into every network layer:

    • Intelligent call routing that designs itself.
    • Predictive maintenance and self-healing systems.
    • AI-driven fraud and risk detection.
    • Conversational analytics for customer experience.

    As generative models mature, we’ll see CSPs and SDPs evolve into adaptive service ecosystems — networks that not only deliver connectivity but continuously learn and optimize.

    The AI landscape is experiencing a fundamental shift. We’ve moved beyond the era of simple prompt-response cycles into something far more sophisticated: agentic systems that can perceive, plan, and execute complex multi-step workflows with minimal human oversight. But building effective AI agents requires more than just connecting LLMs to APIs – it demands thinking like the agent itself. This article draws insights from an internal Tech Talk presented by two R Systems experts, Saksham Pandey and Sakshi Alegaonkar, who shared their hands-on experience building autonomous AI systems.

    The Evolution: Why Agents Matter

    Traditional generative AI operates in a predictable pattern: input prompt pattern matching output response. These systems excel at single-step tasks like summarization or classification, but they’re fundamentally reactive and constrained by their training data. Agentic AI flips this paradigm. Instead of generating static responses, agents receive goals, perceive their environment, plan actions, and execute tasks across multiple steps. They predict, but they also act.

    System Integration: The Technical Stack

    The architecture demonstrates sophisticated system-level thinking:

    • Orchestration Layer: Workflow management with conditional routing based on classification and assessment results

    Design Principles: When to Build Agents

    Not every use case justifies the complexity of agentic architecture. Effective agent design requires evaluating four critical dimensions:

    • Task Complexity Analysis: Agents excel in ambiguous, multi-step scenarios where traditional prompt engineering falls short. If your workflow requires planning, state management, or iterative refinement, consider agentic approaches.
    • Business Impact Assessment: The development overhead of multi-agent systems demands clear ROI justification. Target high-impact use cases where automation delivers measurable business value.
    • Technical Readiness Evaluation: Ensure your infrastructure can support the complexity. Multi-agent systems require robust error handling, monitoring, and orchestration capabilities.
    • Error Sensitivity Consideration: In high-stakes domains like healthcare or finance, agent decisions carry significant consequences. Design appropriate safeguards and human oversight mechanisms.

    The Future: What’s Coming Next

    The trajectory of agentic development points toward three key innovations:

    • Resource-Aware Agents: Tomorrow’s agents will operate within defined computational budgets – monitoring token usage, API costs, and processing time in real-time. This shift enables scalable deployment across resource-constrained environments.
    • Self-Evolving Toolsets: Current agents consume existing tools. Future systems will build and optimize their own tools based on task requirements and performance feedback, creating adaptive toolchains that improve over time.
    • Distributed Agent Networks: Multi-agent collaboration will evolve beyond simple task delegation to sophisticated coordination protocols with clear roles, responsibilities, and communication patterns, enabling agents to tackle distributed challenges at unprecedented scale.

    Implementation Insights: Technical Considerations

    Building effective agents requires attention to several technical nuances:

    • Prompt Architecture: Move beyond single prompts to prompt chains and conditional branching. Each agent needs specialized instructions that account for its specific tools and objectives.
    • State Management: Agents must maintain context across interactions. Implement robust state persistence and retrieval mechanisms to enable coherent multi-step workflows.
    • Tool Abstraction: Create clean interfaces between agents and external systems. Well-designed tool abstractions enable agents to work with diverse APIs without coupling to specific implementations.
    • Error Recovery: Autonomous systems fail in unexpected ways. Build comprehensive error handling, fallback mechanisms, and graceful degradation strategies.

    Conclusion: The Agentic Mindset

    The transition from generative AI to agentic systems represents a fundamental shift in how we architect intelligent systems. Success requires thinking like your agent: understanding its constraints, designing for its strengths, and building with empathy for both the agent’s capabilities and the user’s needs. The future belongs to autonomous, intelligent, and collaborative AI systems. The question isn’t whether agents will transform our technical landscape – it’s whether we’re ready to think like them.

  • Understanding Kubernetes: From Apple Pie to Container Orchestration

    Most technical presentations dive straight into complex concepts and configurations, leaving beginners drowning in jargon before understanding why any of it matters. But what if someone took a different approach? This article is adapted from an internal tech talk where Mihai Scornea, Junior Software Engineer at R Systems, tackled one of the most complex topics in modern development with an ambitious goal: explain Kubernetes in one hour without relying on syntax and technical terms.

    The Universe Before the Apple Pie

    Carl Sagan once said, “If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.” This might sound like a super exaggerated example, but it’s perfectly true. If you start with absolutely nothing, you don’t even have the fabric of reality to work with.

    Imagine trying to explain what an apple pie is to an alien from another dimension. They don’t know what flour, sugar, or apples are. The rules of physics could be completely different from ours. You would truly have to explain our entire universe to them, and you’d have to do it in their language.

    This is exactly the challenge we face when trying to explain Kubernetes to someone. Us humans simply aren’t built to easily understand such complex concepts – not immediately, at least. So, to help people understand Kubernetes, I’ll start from the very beginning.

    Kubernetes is a solution to a problem. Explained by itself, it doesn’t make much sense. But if we first understand the problem it fixes, then we can truly see how Kubernetes works.

    The Developer’s Dilemma

    Picture this common scenario: You write a program that works beautifully on your machine, then you send it to the client. But the client’s machine is vastly different from yours: it might not have the right operating system or it could be missing crucial libraries.

    For example, your program might require Java 21 installed. The client should be able to run it on Windows even if you developed it on Linux, but they need Java 21 installed. The client doesn’t know how to install it. It becomes a problem. This is a simple example, but there are programs that require dozens of things installed and configured just right to work. The fact that the program works on the developer’s machine isn’t that useful – what matters is that the client should be able to use it. Unfortunately, we can’t just ship the developer’s laptop with every program.

    Enter Virtual Machines

    Some very smart people asked themselves: “What if we could?” They figured out a way to simulate a computer inside another computer, and virtual machines were born. All you need is software called a hypervisor that simulates virtual hardware using physical hardware. The client just needs a powerful computer and the hypervisor installed, and now we can fully simulate the developer’s computer on the client’s computer.

    Instead of developing directly on their physical machine, the developer can install a hypervisor, test software on a virtual machine, make sure it works, then save the virtual machine as a file and send it to the client. The client runs it in their own hypervisor, and it comes with every library and dependency already installed.

    But virtual machines aren’t perfect. What if we could make something lighter, faster, and more modular?

    The Hotel Metaphor

    Let me tie these computer concepts to something more familiar. Imagine our computer is a hotel – but not a regular hotel. This is a hotel where guests can bring their own food recipes to the waiters when they go to the restaurant.

    The code of a computer program is very similar to a cooking recipe. You have:

    • Kitchen space and tables (RAM) – where chefs work and place ingredients
    • Empty bowls (variables) – containers for storing values
    • Food processing like mixing two ingredients together (CPU operations) – taking values and performing operations
    • The chef’s hands (CPU registers) – temporarily holding data during operations
    • Extra tools like frying pans (libraries) – additional functionality needed for recipes
    • The freezer (storage/hard drives) – where data is permanently stored
    • Waiters (the kernel) – who read recipes line by line and coordinate everything

    In a normal computer setup, there are no rooms in this hotel. All guests hang out in the same public area, and the hotel already has frying pans and spatulas ready (libraries are pre-installed). The problem arises when guests want different versions of tools – some might want a newer frying pan than others. Programs might require different versions of dependencies, and conflicts emerge.

    The Container Solution

    Building a separate virtual machine for every program is like building an entire hotel for every guest. It’s expensive – you need separate staff, separate buildings, and it takes a lot of time and resources. It’s as if we had a hotel chain to manage.

    Smart people analyzed this problem and realized that only the guests really fight over some things. The rest of the hotel infrastructure (disk space, CPU, RAM, and kernel) remains pretty much the same in all cases. So, they came up with a brilliant idea: What if every guest just thought they were the only guest? What if we gave them individual rooms with room service?

    This is what a container runtime like Docker does. Docker builds walls around guests and acts as room service. Whatever a guest wants gets sent down to the waiters (the kernel), who instruct the chefs (hardware). The kernel does its work and returns output back to the room through the Docker engine.

    The guests have no idea what’s happening outside their rooms – they all think they have their own hotel. There’s a catch: every guest must bring all the tools necessary for their recipe. The hotel no longer provides any tools at all, just access to CPU and RAM. These rooms that hold programs and their dependencies are called containers.

    The guests can also have access to the storage system and network of the host computer. They obtain access to storage through something called volumes and to the network interface through a form of port forwarding. For volumes, the host computer can “share” a folder on its file system and mount it at a location inside the container. The container will think that folder is in its own room as it modifies files in it, when, in reality, it is actually modifying files on the host computer.

    From Containers to Kubernetes

    Containers solve the dependency problem beautifully, but new challenges emerge:

    1. Resource exhaustion: If you need many containers, you might fill up your host machine
    2. Scaling complexity: The solution is to get more computers and run containers on them, but this requires manual tracking of everything
    3. High availability: If you want multiple containers of the same type across machines for redundancy, you need complex routing and load balancing
    4. Management overhead: You could manage two or three machines manually, but what about hundreds?

    This is the problem that Kubernetes solves. Kubernetes excels at coordinating many computers to run containers and managing everything about them exactly the way you want. With Kubernetes, you can have 1000 computers or more, and they’ll all work toward your goal.

    Kubernetes: The Orchestration Layer

    Think of Kubernetes as a sophisticated hotel management system that coordinates multiple hotels (computers) to provide seamless service to guests (containers).

    Core Components of The Control plane

    The control plane in Kubernetes has a lot of components working together in order to manage where containers run and how the networking between them works. Luckily, they all have jobs similar to people working in a hotel (or, in our case, a hotel complex with multiple buildings), therefore, they can all be described in an easier manner:

    The Container Runtime: This is the component that runs the actual containers on our machines. It basically behaves like Docker. It can be told to run new containers or delete existing ones and it will do so. It will also handle the other aspects like port forwarding and mounting volumes, just like Docker. This is our Room Service and also housekeeping.

    The Kubelet: This is also part of the housekeeping of our hotel, or more like the manager of the housekeeping. A kubelet runs in every single hotel and its job is to instruct the Container Runtime what containers should be moving in and out of the hotel. The Container Runtime then runs these containers.

    The kube-api-server: This is the receptionist of our hotel complex. Every single transfer of information about how the hotel manages its guests goes through the receptionist. Every other component only talks to the receptionist. Even us, when we want to make a phone call and book a room for our container, we will  be talking to this receptionist. The receptionist stores all information about the hotel in a guestbook called the ETCD database.

    The ETCD database: This is the guestbook that our receptionist kube-api-server writes information to and also where it reads from when it is asked for information by the other employees.

    The Kubectl command line interface: This is the phone line that we can use to book rooms for our containers in the hotel. We can use commands like “kubectl get pods” for example to get a list of all the rooms occupied in the hotel. This phone line talks directly to the kube-api-server receptionist.

    The kube-scheduler: This is like a reservation planner. When we ask the kube-api-server for a room in a hotel, the kube-scheduler is responsible for finding a suitable hotel with a room big enough for our guest. Some containers might require more resources than what is available on a computer in the cluster, so, they will be scheduled on a machine that has enough resources. It will tell the kube-api-server where the containers should be placed and, the kube-api-server will note it down in the ETCD database. When the Kubelets check via the kube-api-server, the kubelet responsible for the building assigned to the container will make sure to deploy it.

    The kube-controller-manager: This one can perform logical operations on the data stored in the ETCD database. For example, let’s say that we call the kube-api-server receptionist using the kubectl phone line and tell them that we want to move a team of 11 footbal player containers into the hotel (equivalent to applying a replicaset of 11 identifcal containers). The kube-api-server will note this down

    The CoreDNS: This is our information desk. As you will see later, multiple pods of the same type can be placed on the same floor in order to make them easy to reach. CoreDNS can tell us which floor the pods we want are assigned to. Each floor will have an IP address instead of a floor number. For example, we can ask “where is the football-players floor?” and it will tell us “floor 10.96.0.42”. We can then ask the elevator operator for that floor and they will make sure we reach the rooms we needed.

    The kube-proxy: This is our elevator operator. It always makes sure that we reach the right rooms when we ask for a particular floor. In practice, when we define such a floor (or kubernetes service), it is responsible with creating all the networking rules necessary for us to reach a room of the floor we want, when we only access the IP of the floor. When we access a floor, we are randomly routed to one of the pods (containers) on that floor.

    The CNI plugin: Even if each floor has an IP address, each room also has one and they are all on a network called the internal kubernetes overlay network. This CNI plugin is responsible for assigning IP addresses to the rooms and making sure they can all reach each other by these IP addresses. It is the building planner.

    Core Components of Things Deployed on Kubernetes

    Pods: The smallest unit in Kubernetes – an enclosure that can house one or more containers. Unlike individual containers, pods have their own IP address in the internal Kubernetes network and the containers within a pod can share this IP address and storage volumes. Usually, people use the term pod and container interchangeably, however, a pod can contain one or more containers.

    Services: Stable IP addresses tied to pods with particular labels. When you make a request to a service, it routes your request to one of the matching pods, providing built-in load balancing. These are the floors of the hotel mentioned earlier. Moreover, all hotels have glass bridges between their floors so that going to one floor gives us access to all the pods on that floor from all hotels.

    Replica Sets: Ensure you always have the desired number of identical pods running. If one crashes, the replica set automatically creates a replacement. This is like booking rooms for a football team of 11 players with identical needs as mentioned earlier. Such a replica set can be seen in the image with the service, for the nginx pods.

    Deployments: Control replica sets and enable zero-downtime updates through rolling updates – imagine changing an airplane’s engines mid-flight, one by one. These, combined with the services can guarantee smooth version upgrades. We can replace an entire hotel floor with new versions of the pods seamlessly. Gradually scaling down a replicaset and scaling up another one like that is called a rolling update.

    The Magic of Rolling Updates

    Here’s where Kubernetes truly shines. Imagine you have all your pods managed by a replica set and you want to update them. One method is to delete all pods and start an updated replica set, but this creates downtime – users get 404 errors and complaints.

    Kubernetes deployments can perform rolling updates instead. During a rolling update:

    1. Kubernetes slowly removes pods from the old version
    2. Simultaneously adds pods with the new version
    3. Traffic gets served by both versions during the transition
    4. Users might get mixed responses but never see errors
    5. The update completes seamlessly with zero downtime

    This is the magic trick that modern applications use to never go down, even during updates.

    Why This Matters

    Kubernetes abstracts away the complexity of managing distributed systems. Instead of manually configuring load balancers, tracking which containers run where, and orchestrating updates across multiple machines, you declare what you want, and Kubernetes makes it happen.

    It’s the difference between manually conducting a symphony with hundreds of musicians versus having an automated system that ensures every musician plays their part perfectly, in harmony, without you needing to coordinate each individual note.

    Conclusion

    Understanding Kubernetes doesn’t require memorizing syntax or technical specifications. It requires understanding the problems it solves:

    • Dependency conflicts → Containers provide isolation
    • Manual scaling → Kubernetes automates container orchestration
    • Complex deployments → Rolling updates eliminate downtime
    • Resource management → Kubernetes optimally distributes workloads


    Like Carl Sagan’s apple pie, once you understand the universe that Kubernetes operates in (the problems of modern software deployment), the solution becomes not just comprehensible, but elegant.

    The next time someone asks you about Kubernetes, don’t start with pods and services. Start with the developer who needs their program to work everywhere, the client who can’t install dependencies, and the hotel that found a way to give every guest their own perfect room while sharing the same building.

    That’s Kubernetes: the universe that makes the modern software apple pie possible.

His presentation, “OpenShift 101: Enterprise Kubernetes Made Easy,” offered valuable insights into why OpenShift has become such a game-changer for development teams looking to harness the power of Kubernetes without the overwhelming complexity. Here’s Marin’s perspective on how we got here and why OpenShift might just be the solution you’ve been looking for.

    The world of application deployment has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade. What once required manual processes, inconsistent environments, and endless troubleshooting has evolved into a streamlined, automated experience that empowers development teams to focus on what they do best: building great software.

    The Evolution of Deployment: From Chaos to Containers

    In the early days of software deployment, teams faced a familiar set of challenges that seemed almost impossible to tackle. Manual deployments through FTP uploads and custom scripts were the norm, creating environments where development and production systems rarely matched. This inconsistency led to the dreaded “it works on my machine” syndrome, where applications would behave differently across environments, causing friction between development and operations teams.

    Then Docker swooped in like a superhero. Containers changed everything by solving the consistency problem in the most elegant way possible – if it works in a container on your laptop, it’ll work in a container in production.

    Containers brought several key advantages that immediately resonated with development teams. The path from local development to production became beautifully straightforward. They provided environment consistency, eliminating the guesswork between local development and production deployment. The local-to-production flow became seamless, and dependency management was simplified since all dependencies were packaged within the container itself.

    Kubernetes: Power with Complexity

    As organizations began adopting containers at scale, the need for orchestration increased. Managing hundreds of containers manually was not feasible, and this challenge led to the rise of Kubernetes as the de facto standard for container orchestration.

    Kubernetes brought impressive capabilities to the table: it could manage hundreds of containers simultaneously, automatically restart crashed applications, handle traffic distribution and load balancing, and provide powerful orchestration tools that made complex deployments possible. For teams dealing with microservices architectures or large-scale applications, Kubernetes was a quantum leap in operational capability.

    However, Kubernetes also introduced its own set of challenges. The platform’s power came with significant complexity, particularly around configuration management. Teams found themselves drowning in YAML files, trying to navigate a system that lacked built-in user interfaces or intuitive tooling. The learning curve was steep, and many developers needed substantial support to get started effectively.

    OpenShift: Bridging the Gap

    This is where OpenShift enters the story as a game-changer for teams seeking the power of Kubernetes without the overwhelming complexity.     Under the hood, OpenShift maintains the powerful Kubernetes core while adding enterprise-grade enhancements. It uses CRI-O as a secure container runtime, implements operators for automated lifecycle management, and provides OAuth login integration with HTTPS routes for secure access. This combination ensures that teams get the benefits of Kubernetes while maintaining the security and reliability standards that enterprises require.

    The transformation in daily workflows is genuinely remarkable. Applications can be deployed directly from Git repositories with minimal configuration. The platform automatically builds containers using S2I technology, eliminating the need for manual Docker file management. Applications are exposed securely through built-in HTTPS routes, and comprehensive monitoring provides real-time insights into performance and health.

    Perhaps most importantly, OpenShift handles scaling and recovery automatically. Applications can be scaled up or down instantly based on demand, and the platform automatically recovers from pod failures without manual intervention. This level of automation reduces operational overhead significantly while improving application reliability.

    Our Practice Lead, Cristian Constantin, attended DTW Ignite 2025, where he engaged with industry leaders, evaluated emerging technologies, and assessed the practical implementation of AI-driven solutions across telecommunications environments. Below, he shares his insights from the event, providing a technical perspective on the current state of AI adoption in the telecommunications sector.

    This year’s DTW Ignite revealed a telecommunications industry at an inflection point. Operators are finally moving beyond AI proof-of-concepts toward production deployments, though the journey from boardroom presentations to network operations remains challenging.

    From Automation to Intelligence

    Research presented at the event painted a clear picture: AI-driven BSS implementations are not uniform across operators. Each organization is crafting strategies tailored to their specific market conditions and technical capabilities, suggesting the industry has moved past one-size-fits-all approaches.

    The standout session featured CIOs from Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, and Telus sharing real-world GenAI deployments. Beyond the expected network optimization use cases, Deutsche Telekom’s GenAI-powered RFP preparation caught attention as an unexpected but practical application. Their strategic roadmap focuses sharply on three areas: boosting internal AI adoption, building agentic workflows, and ultimately eliminating customer apps entirely.

    Vodafone’s TOBI virtual agent, now operational across 13 countries in Europe and Africa, demonstrates that AI can scale across diverse regulatory environments—a crucial validation for an industry obsessed with compliance complexity.

    Catalyst Projects: Separating Signal from Noise

    The event showcased 58 catalyst projects spanning Composable IT, Autonomous Networks, and AI Innovation. While impressive in volume, the reality check came in the details. Many projects remain architectural exercises rather than operational systems, revealing the persistent gap between telecommunications ambition and execution capability.

    Two concepts stood out for their practical relevance:

    Proactive Issue Resolution flips the traditional support model: “If we know what the problem is, why wait for the customer to call?” Systems now identify affected customers, predict their likely responses, and engage proactively, turning reactive support into predictive customer experience.

    Agent Fabric Architecture addresses vendor lock-in concerns with a multi-agent ecosystem that remains vendor-agnostic. For an industry accustomed to monolithic solutions, this represents a significant architectural shift.

    Implementation Reality: Three Case Studies

    Spatial Web Platform leverages CAMARA APIs for location-based services, with NTT Data building both platform and applications. The focus on number verification and geofencing suggests practical applications beyond the metaverse marketing.

    AI-Powered Billing Platform connects Amdocs’ real-time billing with Amazon Bedrock agents. While conceptually sound, the limited technical demonstration highlighted the challenge of moving from vendor presentations to operational transparency.

    UNITe Unified Communications impressed with genuine field testing – 200 miles of Canadian wilderness validated dual-connectivity hardware for supply chain tracking. This project demonstrated the difference between lab concepts and real-world validation.

    Market Dynamics: East Meets West

    Chinese operators and vendors dominated the event, with China Mobile, China Telecom, and Huawei presenting extensive GenAI implementations. Their heavy participation in catalyst projects suggests accelerated development cycles that may be reshaping competitive dynamics globally.

    Meanwhile, Agentic AI has become the industry’s preferred buzzword, though most implementations remain closer to intelligent automation than true autonomous agents. The terminology evolution reflects both marketing sophistication and technical aspiration.

    The Implementation Gap Persists

    DTW Ignite 2025 showcased an industry in transition, where AI integration momentum is undeniable, but scalable production systems remain elusive. Success stories prove that sophisticated AI can deliver value at telecommunications scale, yet the distance between conceptual frameworks and operational systems continues to challenge even the most capable organizations.

    The operators that will dominate the next phase are those bridging the gap between AI potential and telecommunications reliability. As the industry moves beyond experimentation, the focus shifts from what’s possible to what’s practical, and, more importantly, what’s profitable.

    Denisa V., 23 – Software Engineer, Romania​

    Denisa joined R Systems as a Java Academy intern two years ago. Now, after proving herself an essential team member, she is excited to share she graduated to become a seasoned software developer and is eager to take on new challenges.

    Denisa asks for patience from Millennials as Gen Z continues to navigate the complexities of adulthood. “We’re still learning and figuring things out—mistakes are part of the process”, she reminds them. To those who will follow, she advises, “Be kind to yourself, avoid constant comparison, and focus on your own journey”.

    Harshit K, 22 – Associate Software Engineer, India

    At only 22, Harshit’s accomplishments set him up for a great future ahead. He’s trained over 1400 students in Google Cloud, published 4 research papers, and led his university’s Google Developer Student Club.

    He sees the experience and passion of Millennials as something magical, capable of inspiring and transforming the world around us. He urges them to continue harnessing this expertise in innovative ways. To those who follow, he advises, “Learn about AI as soon as possible. It’s going to be even more dominant in the future.”

    Mihai S., 25 – Junior Software Engineer, Romania

    Mihai graduated top of the class with his Bachelor’s in Computer Science and his Master’s in Artificial Intelligence, and he is now on his way to becoming a Certified Kubernetes Administrator.

    He encourages Millennials to shift their focus from mere numbers to understanding the people behind the data. “Look beyond spreadsheets and remember the human element,” he suggests. To Alpha generations, he offers a reminder to seek happiness and self-improvement, advising, “Don’t stay in a career just because you’ve invested time in it—be proud of your achievements and pursue what truly makes you happy.

    Daniela P., 19 – Project Assistant, Republic of Moldova

    Daniela’s journey led her to be part of the Young European Ambassadors program (an EU initiative focused on empowering youth in Eastern Partnership countries), where she organized over 150 events designed to raise awareness of EU policies and culture. She also led a team of 100 ambassadors and developed strategic outreach campaigns and activities.

    She sees immense value in the knowledge of Millennials and encourages them to share it freely. “Embrace the flexibility of remote work—it’s a chance to combine professional and personal comfort,” she suggests. To Alpha generations, she emphasizes, “Invest in your mental and physical health now; it will pay off in the long run.

    Bruce K., 26 – Marketing Executive, Malaysia

    In high school, Bruce discovered his love for music, sports, and leadership. He founded a music club, led a student sports team, and represented his school in state basketball. While studying Marketing at university, he founded a music production company that went on to reach 1 million views on one of their YouTube videos.

    Bruce advises Millennials to stay open to change, especially with the rapid pace of technological advancements. “Embrace new tools and methods—they can significantly enhance productivity,” he says. To Alpha generations, he suggests, “Cultivate adaptability, stay hungry for knowledge, and build strong communication skills.

    Gaurav S., 25 – Software Engineer, India

    Gaurav takes great pride in the IoT project he was part of, where he took care of production issues and made sure issues were proactively solved before the client’s customers raised them.  

    He believes that learning is a lifelong journey and encourages Millennials and older colleagues to never stop expanding their knowledge. “No matter your age, there’s always something new to learn,” he says. For those coming after, he advises maintaining a sense of curiosity, emphasizing, “Always ask questions—it’s how we innovate and grow.”

    Kanika S., 22 – Trainee Software Engineer, India

    While on her way to becoming an accomplished software engineer, Kanika did not forget her passion for art. Her YouTube channel, dedicated to her art, is continuously growing, and in her free time, she is working with an NGO to spread her love of art to less fortunate children.

    She offers heartfelt advice to prioritize family over the pursuit of work and money. “Family time is invaluable; don’t sacrifice it for career ambitions,” she urges Millennials. To her peers and those younger, she suggests, “Do what makes you happy—finding joy outside of work is key to long-term well-being.”

    Rithikl B., 27 – Services and Support Engineer, India

    Rithikl has been passionate about volunteering since 2018. He’s helped children with their studies, participated in planting events, and distributed food and water in rural areas. His dedication earned him several Freedom Employability Academy (F.E.A) medals.

    To Millennials, he emphasizes the importance of choosing a profession that genuinely brings joy. He advises, “Reflect on your career choices and seek paths that align with your passions.” For younger colleagues, he underscores the value of continuous learning and personal development, adding a quote passed on by his teacher, “Life is like ice cream—enjoy it before it melts.

    Daniel L., 25 – 1st Line Support Engineer, Poland

    Daniel is a man of many activities. He’s been playing the saxophone for the past nine years, successfully tutoring school students in mathematics and physics, learning somersault, and he was able to ride a bike for 130 km in one day.

    He encourages Millennials to understand the unique challenges faced by younger people. “Try to see things from our perspective rather than comparing it to your own experiences,” he advises. To those coming after, he offers a simple but profound suggestion: “Listen to your heart, pursue what you love, and don’t forget the importance of strong relationships.

    Stefania M., 26 – HR Business Partner, Romania

    Volunteering comes naturally to Stefania. At 19, she led a team of 40 volunteers to deliver English workshops on personal development and global awareness to over 1,400 kids in rural Romania. She has continued her volunteer work ever since, including within our company.

    She suggests Millennials reflect on their youth when interacting with younger colleagues. “Times have changed, but the fundamental needs and struggles remain similar,” she says, urging empathy and understanding. She encourages mutual support for Alpha generations, adding, “It’s okay to follow different paths—time will pass regardless, so take opportunities and be flexible.

    Ionuț S., 25 – Software Engineer, Romania

    For Ionuț, software development is truly a passion, and he never backs down from a challenge. For his undergraduate exam, he developed a GPS mobile app and the required documentation in just four days—“a real hackathon,” he calls it. 

    He advises Millennials to be more mindful of work-life balance. “Personal time and well-being are crucial for long-term happiness,” he notes. He highlights the importance of flexibility and adaptability for the following generations, urging them to “embrace change, adapt to new technologies, and remain open to new ways of working.

    Sarfaraz A., 23 – Associate Software Engineer, India

    Sarfaraz achieved a 10 CGPA in high school and continued to balance his academics with sports in college while excelling in inter-college badminton tournaments. He also led a team to develop three projects, including an AI chatbot, a school management system, and a tracking app for women.

    He urges Millennials to embrace new technology and continuously update their skills. “Staying current can open up new opportunities,” he points out while stressing the importance of mental health: “Prioritize self-care and seek support when needed.” He advises younger peers to “maintain curiosity and embrace diversity—it’s key to success in a changing world.”

    Gabriela C., 26 – Office Admin, Republic of Moldova

    Gabriela studied Economics, but her desire for knowledge didn’t let her stop there. She went on to learn graphic design, getting her Adobe certifications in Illustrator and Photoshop. She also did some volunteering, and in 2019, she was involved in a six-week project in Turkey—Discover Adana.

    She reminds Millennials that it’s never too late to seize opportunities. “It’s like planting a tree—the best time was yesterday, but the second best is today,” she says. For Alpha generations, she encourages a mindset of resilience, advising, “Take risks, and don’t fear failure—it’s how we learn and grow.

    Kinga L., 22 – Software Engineer, Poland

    Kinga’s list of accomplishments deserves an article on its own. She started working on basic algorithm implementations in high school, and by the time she finished university, she designed an AI acoustic analysis system. This year she accomplished an important milestone in her career, receiving her first AI certification.

    She encourages Millennials to be open and receptive to the fresh perspectives that younger coworkers bring. “Share your hobbies and work experience—we value your mentorship,” she suggests.     Can you share some of the key changes you’ve made in your daily life to be more eco-friendly?

    “In my daily life, I’ve made several changes to be more eco-friendly. I always bring reusable bags when shopping to avoid plastic packaging and prefer walking to work instead of using transport. I’ve also discovered a passion for gardening, where I plant more trees and flowers. To support local communities, I choose to buy products from eco-markets rather than supermarkets and prioritize organic options. At home, I use energy-efficient LED lights, turn off unused electronics, and avoid single-use plastics by using a glass bottle and a ceramic coffee mug. Additionally, I collect hazardous waste like batteries and expired medicines to recycle them responsibly.”

    What inspired you to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle?

    “Back in 2013, my boss sent me to a 15-day workshop at Auroville, an experimental township in Puducherry, India. They were recycling water, conserving rainwater, building naturally air-conditioned structures, practicing permaculture, and creating with waste materials. They even cooked using solar power and used handmade, eco-friendly cosmetics.

    This workshop opened my eyes to sustainable methods across many aspects of life. Over time, I began to view everything — from my inner self to professional projects — through the lens of sustainability.”

    What are some of your sustainable habits?

    “In my daily life, I try to avoid using a car as much as possible and choose my bike instead. This decision is not only driven by my concern for the environment but also by my desire to take better care of myself. Spending time actively outdoors improves my mood and supports a healthy lifestyle. Plus, I save time by avoiding traffic jams!”

    “Whatever we give to nature, nature returns to us — often in greater measure. Nurture the Earth, and it nurtures you back. Pollute it, and we face the consequences.

    Nature is not separate from us; it’s a reflection of our actions. Choose wisely, give mindfully, and the planet will give back in abundance.”

    How do you maintain an eco-friendly lifestyle while traveling?

    “When I travel, I use solar power to recharge gadgets, explore destinations on foot, by bike, or using electric scooters, and always sort and recycle waste. I make it a point to leave no trash behind and to respect nature, local communities, and their customs wherever I go.

    We sat down with Marina Svidki, a project manager and a mother of six – three biological, three adopted – to talk about what connection really means when life is full and roles are many. Her story is about much more than parenting. It’s about being human – imperfect, real, and sometimes uncertain – and learning to trust that who we are, in all our parts, is enough.

    Though colleagues often admire her calm leadership and ability to “hold it all together,” she opens up about the quiet moments of doubt, the internal tug-of-war between roles, and the quiet power of reconnecting – with herself, with her purpose, and with the people around her.

    Could you share a bit about your journey to having such a diverse family with both biological and adopted children?

    After having three biological sons – one from a previous marriage and two from the current one – my partner and I still felt our family wasn’t quite complete. We had always hoped for a daughter, and when we realized the probability of having a girl through pregnancy was quite low, we began seriously discussing adoption.

    We went through numerous evaluations and checks and eventually obtained the necessary certification that allows for adoption.

    We waited patiently for two years without finding a suitable match. I remember the day we finally received the call about a little girl available for adoption – it felt like our dream was finally coming true. However, during the discussion, we learned she had two brothers. After talking it through as a family, we made what turned out to be one of the best decisions of our lives: to adopt all three siblings together.

    Now with six children – three biological sons and three adopted children including the daughter we had hoped for – our family feels wonderfully complete.

    At work, you’re seen as a strong, capable leader. At home, you’re a mother of six. Do you ever feel like you’re two different people?

    Of course, these are different roles, and I do try to separate the two while still being present in both. Balancing my role as a project manager with being a mother of six requires intentional boundaries and support systems. I’m fortunate that my workplace offers flexible arrangements that accommodate family needs when they arise. Over time, I’ve learned that clearly separating my professional and family responsibilities helps me be more present in both areas of my life.

    Are there specific skills you’ve developed as a mother that have unexpectedly enhanced your effectiveness as a project manager, or vice versa?

    Yes, I often find myself applying parenting techniques in professional settings and bringing project management frameworks home, sometimes without even realizing it until later!

    One framework that I’ve noticed applies in both worlds is what parenting experts call the three Cs: connection, control, and competence. I initially learned about this approach for child development, but I’ve discovered it’s remarkably effective with professional teams as well.

    Beyond this, crisis management is perhaps the most transferable skill I’ve developed. When you’re raising six children, you learn to become adaptable to unexpected changes and emergencies, and this has helped me stay calm under pressure at work. Last, but not least, both roles have strengthened my emotional intelligence.

    What helps you stay connected to yourself when work gets intense or life gets loud?

    What’s been absolutely essential for my well-being is establishing regular “me time.” My husband and I have a routine where each of us gets one evening a week that’s completely our own. This dedicated time to recharge isn’t negotiable in our family calendar—it’s as important as any work meeting or children’s activity.

    During my “me time,” I reconnect with activities that feed my soul but often get pushed aside in day-to-day life. Sometimes that means spending quiet time in nature, where I can breathe and process my thoughts without interruption. Other times, I’ll meet with close friends for coffee and conversation. These simple activities help me relax and remember who I am beyond my roles as mother and professional.

    I’ve come to understand that self-care isn’t selfish – it’s essential. Taking time for myself allows me to show up more fully for everyone else in my life. When I’m exhausted or stressed, I simply don’t have the emotional bandwidth to support my children or contribute meaningfully at work. Self-care gives me tools to manage difficult emotions rather than being overwhelmed by them.

    My husband and I also prioritize our relationship amid the busyness. We schedule regular date nights to maintain our connection – sometimes it’s just a simple walk together after the children are in bed, other times it’s dinner out while a family member watches the kids.

    People often admire everything you manage. Do you always feel that admiration matches how you see yourself? Have you ever questioned whether you’re a “good enough” mom or leader? How do you work through those moments?

    I appreciate that, but there sometimes is a gap between how I am perceived and my own internal experience, because moments of self-doubt and vulnerability are inevitable.

    I have to admit that in the beginning of our adoption journey, both my husband and I felt a bit lost. We never second-guessed our decision to adopt, we were very clear on that, but we did doubt our abilities as parents.

    After some discussions with our children, and among ourselves, we realized that we had set some very high expectations. What helped immensely was redefining what “success” looked like for our family. Rather than striving for some perfect vision of blended family life or flawless work-family balance, we began celebrating small victories and focusing on the positives: that we had a large, warm, welcoming family, with lots of support!

    Is there anything you would like to share with colleagues who are balancing a leadership role with family responsibilities? 

    From my experience, to have a balanced family life, firstly you need to look after yourself and your own wellbeing because children are like a mirror – they reflect everything back at you.

    What I’ve learned through raising six children while managing projects is that authentic connection requires intentionality and it rarely happens by accident in either environment. For me, creating genuine connection begins with clear prioritization. Each day, I assess what needs my focused attention most urgently. Sometimes work demands take precedence, and other days family clearly needs to come first. The key is being fully present wherever I am. When I’m leading my team, I’m fully engaged with them. And when I’m home, I try to be completely present with my children rather than constantly checking emails.

    Building strong support networks has been absolutely essential for maintaining these connections. At work, this means developing relationships of trust with colleagues who can step in when family needs arise. At home, I’ve learned that asking for help actually strengthens rather than weakens connections. My sister and mother have been incredibly supportive with childcare, and we’ve utilized services to manage some household responsibilities.

    Perhaps most crucial to maintaining connection in both spheres is nurturing my partnership with my husband. We approach parenting and household management as a united team, regularly checking in with each other about needs and challenges. This strong foundation at home gives me the emotional resilience to connect authentically at work, and the leadership skills I develop professionally often strengthen how I relate to my family.
